GENERAL OVERVIEW
Lighting is the most important fact or in interior design
Expensive materials & interiors are never shown to their fullest without a good lighting scheme behind them
Incorporating Lighting as part of the scheme considering how the light works with the materials and finishes and creating different moods with in the space is essential to a successful interior

DAY VISION - PHOTOPIC VISION During day time eye is more sensitive to Yellow- Green color. The color sensitive cells in retina are active during this time
NIGHT VISION - SCOTOPIC VISION During night time no color sensation is possible. Eye are more sensitive to Blue color during night time.
EVENING VISION - MESOPIC VISION This is the intermediate vision between the above types. Our eyes capable of adjusting to a difference in Luminance or in color. Eyes adjust itself as one moves from Bright area to a adark one & vise-versa.

GENERAL/AMBIENT INDOOR LIGHTING General or ambient lighting is intended to light up a room in its entirety. It provides a uniform level of illumination throughout the space independently of other lighting sources.

ACCENT LIGHTING Accent lighting or Architectural lighting is used to highlight walls and objects in the room.

TASK LIGHTING Task lighting illuminates the tasks a person carries out in a given space such as reading, cooking, computer work.

TYPES OF LIGHT SOURCE
INCANDESCENT LAMPS: Electric current is passed through a filament, which emits light upon heating. 100 watt bulb is capable of producing 1600 lumens. These are available in different sizes and shapes.

For general lighting in homes, shops, hotels where bright yet comfortable light is required
Good color rendering
Instantaneous operation
Low installation cost
Low Luminous efficacy

HALOGEN LAMPS:
TUNGSTEN HALOGEN LAMP: Halogen gas such as iodine inside the bulb prevents wear on the filament, allowing it to glow brighter.
77 watt bulb is capable of producing 1600 lumens. Average life span of bulb is 1000 hrs.
Good color rendering
Low Luminous efficacy
FLUORESCENT LAMPS : A fluorescent lamp is a low pressure mercury-vapor gas- discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light.

An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow
Medium Luminous Efficancy
Medium color rendering
Long Life
COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMPS: Fluorescent Lamp in Circular shape

Good color rendering
High Luminous efficacy
Longer life
Energy Efficient

MERCURY VAPOUR LAMP:

A mercury-vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses an electric arc through vaporized mercury to produce light.
High Luminous Efficancy
Medium color rendering
Long Life
METAL HALIDE LAMP:
It is a modified version of mercury vapour lamp.Certain metal iodides & bromides are added into the mercury are tube to improve efficancy & color rendition

Excellent color rendering
Crisp white light
High Lumen output
High Luminous efficacy
Energy efficient
SODIUM VAPOUR LAMPS : It uses sodium as a discharge material. It emits a golden yellow light

Very high Luminous Efficancy
Lowest color rendering
Long Life
More lumens output
Energy efficient
LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED): An LED bulb contains many small semi-conductor units; each emits light when a voltage is applied. These are the most efficient bulbs

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF LIGHT
Emotions(both positive & negative) are felt more intensely under bright light
Excessive light at night, including electronic media can create difficulties sleeping and exacerbate sleeping disorders
Students and workers are healthier, happier & more productive when there is more natural light(day light).
